In this piece on immaterial authenticity, I link the development of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to the 18th century phenomenon of Werktreue. Originally a measure to evaluate the authenticity of a musical performance, Werktreue became (and still is) a rhetorical instrument for enacting exclusion, appropriated by fascist cultural policy.
