Against Analogy

Diffraction as Design Thinking
Workshop at Iceland University of the Arts

Together with Tamar Shafrir, I taught a four day workshop at the Design MA of the Iceland University of the Arts. The workshop was mainly based on Karen Barad's critique of analogies and her introduction of Diffraction as an alternative, more nuanced approach to representation. The outcome was a series of small publications.

First, students were invited to understand analogy as a technological device by creating a first publication with visual analogies. A collective reading of Barad's text followed and was paired with examples from design, architecture and poetry. Students then designed compact publications that invited non-analogical, diffractive reading und understanding.
